"Estonian woman" goes beyond the stereotypes of being a woman in our cultural space. The myth of "beautiful Estonian women" is much too exploited and includes mostly women in their 20ies. Comparision with this image diminishes the acceptance of time passing by and one's own body. Monko studies the chrystallized ways of imaging a woman as certain masks and photographes women "not fitting to the discourse". The artist had in mind the portraits of women from Renaissance, where the steady, calm poses and eye contact with the viewer are important. |
